Many have to walk long distances on foot and once at the medical facility are unable to afford to pay for the treatment.People do not have insurance and sickness therefore threatens not just their health but also the livelihood of entire families and communities.

Through an innovative approach Transform Africa Medical Insurance Scheme allows families to insure their members using farm produce like goats and chicken which are far easier to come by than hard cash. For those who are unable to provide even that, there is an option to provide time and work in as payment for the insurance.

One of the reasons Africa is “poor” is because she is forced to “donate” her valuable raw material at a fraction of their true value. For example, coffee is exported raw to Europe at 1 US$ per kilo and is then re-imported into Africa at 15 US$ per kilo. This means Africa is donating 14US$ per kilo of coffee to other nations. Of the global coffee industry of US$ 144 billion only US$ 15 billion goes to the nations that actually grow the coffee. Which means that US$ 129 billion is “exported” to other nations.

One major factor that prevents African Enterprises from developing the necessary infrastructure to process Africa’s raw materials is access to affordable finance. Across Africa Finance is expensive and International lenders are unwilling to lend directly to African companies because of the high credit risk, real or imagined.

Morning Star Finance is an effort by young African Entrepreneurs to establish a savings society that will be able to provide affordable finance to members to expand their capital base and businesses.
